Unfolding Urbanism and Civilisation
When Professor Michio Kaku was interviewed by Anthony Fordham he had a chance to let us know where we stand and how will ‘all this’ unfold?
Professor Kaku is a founder of string theory and renowned science presenter.
In his words: “Science is always a double edge sword. There is a danger it will be used for destruction. But I would say within the next 100 years we will become a Type 1 civilisation. and we will control all planetary energy consumption including our climate. Then, in 1000 Years we could move to begin a Type II civilisation, where we control all the energy being put out by the sun. And finally maybe 100,000 years from now we will be a Type III civilisation, controlling the entire Galaxy.
Today we are Type 0. For all our technology, we still have all the savagery from our distant past. But I think we are making the transition. The internet is the beginning of a Type I communication system. We are witnessing the birth of a new king of civilisation here on Earth.” 1
Why is this important for us? We need to understand technology discoveries to properly design cities of the future. Cities designed today should operate in 3 computer era’s from now talking about what we know that has been developed in last 10 years. So clearly old legislation dating back 100 years will not serve us well.
On the positive note I believe everything we need to sustain our habitats has already been discovered and we are safe.
